Space In Your Head’s First ever issue: Afterward by James Perry

A lot of you might not know me, but my name is James, and I run Space In Your Head. I’ve loved every minute of this project so far, and I’m so proud of everyone who has sent in something. I’ve chosen this months works for the publication based on what I thought worked coherently in the theme of ‘Space’. This is a multimedia publication, so I tried to also pick a broad range of formats.

This project was originally conceptualised as something to offer friends of mine who want to create and share art. I wanted it to be a safe, open artistic community for university students and graduates who suffer from mental illness. I began studying a few online literature and art communities at university. Now, graduating, I wanted to do something with this.

So many of my friends suffer from mental illness, and I can only imagine how hard it must be. I wanted to use such a space to reach out to anyone who goes through all of this shit inside their head, and who would have increased anxiety, fear, insecurities about sharing art, and facing things like knockbacks and interviews once they enter the world outside university. This includes people who are already well outside of university. The premise remains the same.

I really hope my efforts so far have helped people feel confident in their work. I want Space In Your Head to keep on growing, get more submissions, get shared more, all of that. I want to keep offering support for those who need it, and I want people to really enjoy their creative sides, and not feel tormented when it comes to doing something they love.

So here it is, the first issue of what I’m hoping is many to come of the Space In Your Head monthly publication. I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading. Thank you.
